Today I woke up with a gratifying feeling knowing that I
celebrated John's life and music with all the right people--singing and playing his-songs
with much love and devotion. The weather was so nice that you felt as though John had
something to do with it. It was nice seeing and meeting some of John's fans as we walked
around this beautiful little town of Aspen. I'd been here quite a few times with John and
felt like he was still around somewhere.
The second show seemed a little easier to perform, but there was something
missing. I turned to see if Annie was sitting backstage. She had decided to stay home that
evening. I sure could have used her presence while playing John's songs. When I turned and
faced the audience to finish playing one of the endings which featured me, it felt like
John was standing right next to me giving me the love and energy I needed to help me
finish that song. From then on I closed my eyes and imagined him standing out front
singing. His presence was definitely on that stage both nights.
I think the hardest part of the show was at the end when the lights
went down and in the center of the stage there was a guitar and a bouquet of roses. They
played a tape of "This Old Guitar," and John's voice resonated throughout the
theater as if he were singing just for us. There was not a dry eye after that.
We were emotionally drained after playing John's music for two
nights, but there seemed to be so much to be thankful for. The fans who showed up from all
over the world gave so much support to John and his music, and that it made it easier for
us to perform. We even heard that a woman sold her car just to be a part of the
celebration of John's life.
There was a second gathering at Club Chelsey after the show. The
fans who showed up were so nice and easy to talk with. We signed autographs and had our
pictures taken. John would be proud to know that we appreciated his fans as much as he
did. Those are devoted and wonderful people out there for John.
